I always liked the theme song to the Jeffersons. It’s very catchy! George and Weezy finally moved on up. Are you moving on up in your career?
I know with the current economy, it’s hard to think about moving on up when you’re just trying to stay period. But humor me.
How do you move on up in your career, really? Do you plan ahead 5, 10, 15 years? For those of you who have successfully moved up, how important is having mentors? Research shows that mentoring is imperative to careers (really life in general).
How do you market yourself? What’s your brand? How important is networking in your career climb?
Well, no one has commented on this post so I’ll start.
I start a new, permanent (not more contracting) position soon. I feel that it has taken me years to finally get on the career path I’m supposed to be on. In the past I felt that I had to find a career directly related to my degree. What I have learned (and has helped me move up in my career) is to take detours and risks. I made some moves that others thought were crazy (sometimes took a decrease in salary but gave me a new skill set) and was willing to work there long enough to get what I needed.
So, basically:
1. take needed detours and risks
2. when establsihing a career, sometimes you have to look beyond the money
3. trust yourself and don’t listen to what others think you should do for your career
4. find a career that makes you happy (might as well considering you’ll be at that job 8 hours a day/5 times a week)
