Checking In

On one of my favorite shows, “The Game”, the main characters Melody and Derwin decided they weren’t ready to be a couple again, but they would “check in” with each other. Whenever their schedules permitted, they would check in to see how the other was doing and if they wanted to get together and hang out.

So, I’m checking in with you all… (however, not like Melody and Derwin’s “checking in”). Yesterday was the 4th of July (Happy belated 4th) and we’re on the downside of 2010. Soon it will be 2011 (can you believe how fast this year is going?).

Realizing this made me take stock of my life at this point. A few blogs ago, I wrote out my vision: getting out of debt, expanding my business to include freelance writing, starting to get into real estate investing, etc.

How am I doing? I’m on track. It’s going more slowly than I would like but at least it’s going.

What about your career goals? Are you checking in on the opportunities that your company offers or are you complaining that you can’t get ahead? My company offers individual accounts designated for education and training. You can go to conferences, workshops, or use it to pay for classes towards your degree. I know some coworkers that have at least $2,000 in their accounts because they are “too busy to go to training”. Whateva, LAME. I have exactly $62 left in my account because I’ve taken advantage of every training that will help me in my career. Plus I’m not passing up free money from the job (that’s like not contributing enough to your 401(K) to get matching contributions from the company. I know you all are not doing that right?).

Still working out? Remember you (and me) made that New Year’s resolution to lose weight. I must admit, I fell off for about a month. Never again. When I went back to the gym, it was MUCH harder. I usually lose weight in the summer because I don’t cook as much (it’s too hot to have an oven on). But I gotta check my eating out habits or at least choose the healthiest option available.

There are so many areas of our lives that we need to “check in” on. Some areas we’ve neglected because of various reasons (fear, lack of resources, more pressing priorities, etc.). But it’s time to face the music and get to work.

So, checking in: How are things going?
